The Assam Nurses' Midwives' & Health Visitors' Council is an autonomous statutory body responsible for the registration of qualified Nurses, Midwives, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and Health Visitors, in accordance with the provisions of Section 17(a) of the Assam Nurses' Midwives' & Health Visitors' Act, 1944.

The Registration Act was enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly in 1944 and received the assent of the Governor of Assam on 6th June 1953. It extends to the whole of the State of Assam.

This Act was framed through the tireless efforts of Ms. Amy Bullock, a British nursing professional who became the first Registrar of the Council and played a pivotal role in organising nursing regulation in Assam.

Functions of the Council

• 1Grant recognition to nursing institutions under the Act.
• 2Register qualified nursing professionals and maintain the State Register.
• 3Develop professional linkages with nursing councils in other States.
• 4Monitor and regulate nursing education and services across Assam.
• 5Regulate professional conduct and action against malpractice.
• 6Conduct examinations for ANM, GNM, LHV, and DPN courses.
